Position Summary: The Master Plumber functions as crew leader for journeyperson plumber and other assigned workers. Obtains permits and performs all aspects of plumbing work as required by law.
Essential Duties include: - Perform master-level installation, inspection, repair, assembly, testing, and maintenance of domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, natural gas, steam piping, compressed air, vacuum, and related plumbing systems and equipment in accordance with applicable national, state, and local codes.
- Serve as the responsible, licensed Master Plumber for permits, inspections, code compliance, and plumbing work requiring Master Plumber oversight.
- Inspect and evaluate plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures to ensure safe, efficient, reliable operation and determine compliance with applicable plumbing codes and standards.
- Develop plans, specifications, project estimates, and schedules for plumbing projects, including determining labor, equipment, materials, and other resources required to complete assigned work.
- Prepare written reports, project documentation, inspection reports, work records, and cost estimates.
- Provide leadership, technical guidance, training, and oversight to Journeyperson Plumbers and other assigned personnel.
- Plan, coordinate, assign, prioritize, and review plumbing work to ensure quality, efficiency, safety, and code compliance.
- Monitor and troubleshoot major plumbing breakdowns by diagnosing trouble, and repairing, replacing or taking other corrective action of such items as clogged main water and sewer lines, main gas line breakdown, and steam piping.
- Develop and maintain preventative maintenance programs for plumbing systems and equipment, including pumps, valves, water heaters, domestic hot water systems, sanitary sewer systems, grease interceptors, mixing valves, water softeners, and backflow prevention assemblies.
- Perform testing, inspection, preventative maintenance, certification support, and repair of backflow preventers throughout campus as required by state and local codes.
- Install, connect and test plumbing fixtures such as urinals, water closets, wash basins, sinks, drinking fountains, compressed air fixtures, and such gas connections.
- Install and maintain sterilizers, still, washers, glasswashers, and institutional kitchen equipment, swimming pool facilities, mixing valves, water softeners, grease pits and special equipment.
- Maintain and keep updated plumbing valve charts for water and drain lines, shut-offs, and plumbing fixtures for campus and other college facilities.
- Perform complex calculations, material takeoffs, system evaluations, and planning activities for major plumbing projects.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of the plumbing shop, assigned vehicles, tools, storage areas, and workspaces.
- Assist the Design and Construction Department with plumbing system design reviews, project planning, renovations, and capital improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies, contractors, consultants, vendors, and suppliers regarding plumbing-related activities.
- Responsible for maintaining the inventory of necessary supplies, materials, and equipment needed to perform plumbing and non-HVAC mechanical duties.
- Utilize artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools and software, to support job-related functions and improve efficiency, accuracy, communication, documentation, planning, training, troubleshooting, reporting, work management, and other operational responsibilities, while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Regular attendance on campus is required for this position.

| Minimum Qualifications: | Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Successful completion of a U.S. Department of Labor-recognized Plumber Apprenticeship Program, or possession of a recognized Plumber Journeyperson credential or applicable state license.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of demonstrated experience as a licensed Journeyperson Plumber.
- Possess and maintain a valid Michigan Master Plumber License.
- Possess and maintain an ASSE-approved Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification.
- Thorough knowledge of the Michigan Plumbing Code and applicable federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and industry standards, with the ability to remain current on code changes and requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction documents, specifications, drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Proficiency in the use of plumbing tools, testing equipment, diagnostic instruments, and related technology.
- Basic computer proficiency, including spreadsheets, databases, word-processing software, email, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Ability to travel between campus buildings and work on multiple floors, including mechanical rooms, utility spaces, and other concealed or restricted-access areas.
- Demonstrated ability to wear appropriate forms of respiratory protection, personal protective equipment (PPE), and may require passing medical qualification examination for use of appropriate respirators.
- Ability to work in all types of inclement weather, some sites may necessitate working at sites with noise greater than 90 decibels, may include heights, streets and roadways, and poorly ventilated areas.
- Demonstrated ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 60 pounds, unassisted, including lifting materials to a height of at least three feet above floor level.

- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet the College’s requirements for operating College vehicles.
- May be required to operate a vehicle for approved College business. Must possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle operated, meet the College’s Authorized Driver requirements, successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Record review, and comply with all College vehicle use and safety policies.
- Demonstrated ability to use standard workplace technology and emerging AI-supported tools relevant to the position. Ability to evaluate AI-generated information for accuracy and appropriateness, maintain confidentiality of institutional information, and exercise sound judgment and ethical practices when using AI technologies in support of work-related responsibilities.
