| Position Description: | This position is seasonal and will be evaluated at the end of each season(s). No continuing employment rights are inferred. The position is paid by a stipend that is divided into equal payments throughout the season(s). Position Summary: The Women’s Club Softball Coach is responsible for instructing and educating the softball team on the game of softball as well as encouraging sportsmanship, teamwork, and time management. The coach is responsible for representing Washtenaw Community College positively at all times and providing a positive experience for all athletes. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct scheduled tryout sessions and plan for and conduct practice sessions.
- Attend, arrive on time, and actively coach all tryout and practice sessions as well as competitions.
- Maintain knowledge of game, rules, and skills necessary for the sport.
- Advise team in sports rules, game strategies, and performance principles.
- Focus on the improvement of players and the team as a whole while keeping participation enjoyable.
- Determine the game line up and make changes as needed.
- Instruct and facilitate pre- and post-game procedures as well as take care of and communicate any abrupt situations/issues.
- Hold yourself and your players to high standards of sportsmanlike conduct, and communicate professionally with officials and opposing teams.
- Ensure players conduct themselves in accordance with WCC students’ rights and responsibilities and abide by the Club Sports Handbook.
- Provide basic first aid in the event of an emergency; always take measures to reduce the risk of injury during sporting events.
- Responsible for maintaining and turning in all college issued equipment.
- Using the arena of sports, educate players about the value of discipline, time management, teamwork, and the value of academic success.
- Only allow players who attend practice at least once that week to compete in the competition(s) that week except with prior approval from the Supervisor of Sports.
- Only allow eligible student-athletes from the team’s roster to participate in both games and practices.
- Communicate regularly and positively with student athletes in regards to the season, sport, and any concerns.
- Drive rental vehicles to transport players to and from competitions.
Related Duties:
- In cooperation with the Sports Office, communicate with players and spectators regarding schedules and changes. Coaches are to be liaisons between the team and Supervisor of Sports.
- Refer questions, concerns and student-athlete cut/removal or equipment requests to the Supervisor of Sports.
- Provide the Sports Office with necessary player paperwork, including waivers and reports weekly.
- Responsible for requesting, maintaining and distributing, as necessary, all game related reports and attendance to the Sports Office each week and other entities as required.
- Return calls and answer student interest questions as requested by the Supervisor of Sports.
- Report scores within 24 hours of a competition to the Sports Office.
- Must assist with recruitment that must be first approved by the Supervisor of Sports.
- Understand the guidelines presented in the Club Sports Handbook and follow at all times.
- Make sure facilities are left clean and organized after each use.
- Assist with end of season meeting and/or re-cap as requested.
- Responsible for washing of team uniforms or drop them off at WCC Sports with significant time to be washed.
- Select team captains appropriately who should be encouraged to meet with the Supervisor of Sports every two weeks during the season.
- Utilize technology, including AI-enabled tools and software where appropriate, to support the effective performance of assigned duties, enhance productivity, improve communication and information management, support decision-making, and other responsibilities, while ensuring compliance with confidentiality requirements, institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Complete all other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands: - Ability to frequently walk/run, stand, bend, squat, lift, push/pull and kneel.
Hours/Schedule: - Practices on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:00pm-6:00pm. Games held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after 4:00pm or on the weekends during the day.

| Minimum Qualifications: | Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience
- Two (2) years coaching experience or significant college playing experience preferred
- Availability to commit to the entire schedule
- Knowledge of rules and skills of particular sport
- Willingness to place emphasis on the studies first and athletics second
- Satisfactory driver’s record review
- Satisfactory background check
- First Aid and CPR certification (Must be completed 60 days after hire or employment authorization. Once obtained, must be renewed before expiration. The College will reimburse up to $125.00 for new or renewal training with a copy of the receipt and completed certificate.)
- Ability to use workplace technology relevant to the position, including the capacity to learn and appropriately leverage emerging AI-supported tools. Ability to assess the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content, maintain confidentiality, and apply sound judgment and ethical practices in the use of technology.
