Washtenaw Community College is seeking a qualified Part Time Trainer – Apartment Maintenance & Repair to serve as a subject matter expert and trainer for short-term, noncredit apartment maintenance and repair training. This role will support the development of instructional materials and deliver Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician coursework, preparing students for entry-level apartment maintenance, residential property maintenance, and related building maintenance roles. The Part Time Trainer – Apartment Maintenance & Repair is responsible for serving as a subject matter expert and trainer for short-term, noncredit apartment maintenance and repair training. This role will support the development of course materials and deliver instruction for Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician coursework and related workforce training. The trainer will work with Corporate Training & Lifelong Learning to develop and organize instructional materials, learning activities, demonstrations, assessments, student resources, and other course materials needed to support effective course delivery. The trainer will also provide practical, workforce-aligned instruction that prepares students to understand apartment maintenance responsibilities, basic repair practices, safety procedures, work order completion, preventative maintenance, and real-world property maintenance expectations Essential Duties include: Must include the following— · Serve as the subject matter expert for Apartment Maintenance & Repair course content and Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician coursework. · Develop, organize, and prepare instructional materials for course delivery, including presentations, handouts, learning activities, demonstrations, practice exercises, assessments, and student resources. · Deliver short-term, noncredit workforce training related to apartment maintenance, residential property maintenance, building repair, and related maintenance practices. · Provide instruction on maintenance safety, proper use of tools and equipment, work order procedures, preventative maintenance, and professional maintenance practices. · Provide instruction on basic electrical systems, including safety procedures, troubleshooting, outlets, switches, breakers, lighting, and related maintenance tasks appropriate for apartment maintenance settings. · Provide instruction on basic plumbing systems, including fixtures, leaks, drains, toilets, faucets, water heaters, valves, and related maintenance tasks. · Provide instruction on HVAC fundamentals, including basic heating, cooling, ventilation concepts, filters, thermostats, common service issues, and maintenance practices appropriate for entry-level apartment maintenance roles. · Provide instruction on appliance repair and troubleshooting, including common issues related to refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, garbage disposals, washers, dryers, and other residential appliances as appropriate. · Provide instruction on interior and exterior maintenance, including drywall, painting, doors, locks, windows, flooring, weatherization, grounds, and general repair tasks. · Use real-world scenarios, hands-on demonstrations, maintenance examples, troubleshooting activities, and applied projects to support student learning. · Design and facilitate learning activities that connect apartment maintenance and repair skills to real-world workplace applications in apartment communities, residential property management, facilities maintenance, building maintenance, and related industries. · Help students understand workplace expectations related to safety, professionalism, customer service, documentation, communication, time management, and working in occupied residential environments. · Facilitate hands-on practice activities, quizzes, review sessions, demonstrations, and applied skill-building activities as appropriate. · Maintain a safe, inclusive, and professional learning environment for students with varying levels of maintenance, repair, technical, and workplace experience. · Communicate course expectations, learning outcomes, safety requirements, tool and equipment requirements, completion requirements, and credential-related expectations clearly to students. · Review and update course materials as needed to align with current apartment maintenance practices, CAMT coursework, property maintenance standards, workforce training needs, and employer expectations. · Coordinate with Corporate Training & Lifelong Learning staff regarding course content, materials, equipment, lab space, scheduling, safety needs, and student support. · Follow WCC policies, procedures, and expectations for part-time trainers. · Perform other duties as assigned. Related Duties: · Recommend current instructional tools, maintenance resources, repair exercises, equipment, sample work orders, and applied training materials. · Provide input on course design, delivery format, lab needs, tool and equipment needs, safety procedures, and future course improvements. · Support updates to course content as maintenance practices, apartment industry expectations, CAMT coursework, safety standards, tools, equipment, or workforce needs change. · Communicate classroom, lab, technology, equipment, tool, supply, or facility needs before the start of the course. · May assist with course improvement feedback after course offerings. · May support future course enhancements based on student needs, workforce demand, employer feedback, and industry trends. Work Environment/Physical Demands: · Instruction will primarily take place in a standard classroom, training lab, or other approved instructional setting with an instructor station, classroom display, internet access, and seating for students. The course may require access to tools, equipment, appliances, maintenance training materials, lab stations, demonstration areas, and other hands-on instructional resources. · Hands-on activities may involve basic maintenance and repair demonstrations using tools, equipment, fixtures, appliances, electrical training materials, plumbing training materials, HVAC-related instructional resources, and other maintenance-related items. All hands-on activities must be conducted in accordance with applicable safety procedures and facility requirements. · The position generally requires the ability to teach in a classroom or lab setting, operate instructional technology, stand or walk during instruction, communicate clearly with students, and demonstrate basic maintenance and repair tasks. · The trainer may occasionally need to transport, set up, lift, move, or handle tools, printed materials, classroom resources, lightweight equipment, maintenance supplies, or training materials. · The position may require bending, reaching, standing for extended periods, using hand tools, demonstrating basic repair activities, and assisting students during hands-on practice. Any hands-on activity must be conducted in accordance with safety requirements and applicable procedures. Hours/Schedule: · This is a part-time training assignment scheduled based on course offerings, course development needs, and department need. |
| Minimum Qualifications: | Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: · Demonstrated knowledge of apartment maintenance, residential property maintenance, building maintenance, or related repair practices. · Current MIOSHA certification or equivalent approved workplace safety training related to maintenance, repair, construction, facilities, or a similar technical area. · Knowledge of maintenance safety, proper tool use, work order procedures, preventative maintenance, customer service, and professional maintenance expectations. · Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC, appliance repair, interior repair, exterior repair, and general maintenance concepts relevant to apartment maintenance settings. · Ability to serve as a subject matter expert in apartment maintenance and repair. · Ability to develop, organize, and prepare instructional materials for course delivery. · Ability to teach technical and hands-on maintenance concepts clearly to students with varying levels of prior experience. · Ability to demonstrate maintenance and repair tasks safely and effectively in a classroom, lab, or approved instructional setting. · Strong communication, organization, and training facilitation skills. · Ability to connect course content to real-world applications in apartment communities, residential property management, facilities maintenance, building maintenance, and related workforce roles. · Ability to maintain a safe, inclusive, and professional learning environment. · Basic computer skills and ability to use classroom technology, digital instructional materials, and internet-based resources. · Ability to work collaboratively with WCC staff regarding course development, course delivery, scheduling, materials, lab needs, equipment, and student support. |
| Preferred Qualifications: | Additional Preferred Qualifications: · Prior teaching, training, coaching, or instructional experience. · Experience developing or adapting workforce training curriculum, instructional materials, assessments, or learning activities. · Experience teaching or training students, employees, or workforce participants in maintenance, repair, construction, facilities, apartment maintenance, or related technical areas. · Experience working in apartment maintenance, residential property maintenance, facilities maintenance, building maintenance, construction trades, or a related field. · Familiarity with Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician coursework or apartment industry training standards. · Experience working with adult learners, noncredit students, workforce training participants, career changers, or entry-level learners. · Knowledge of current apartment industry expectations, maintenance practices, safety procedures, tools, equipment, and employer needs. · Certification, licensure, or formal training related to apartment maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, facilities maintenance, EPA Section 608, or related technical areas. |
