Washtenaw Community College is seeking a qualified Part Time Trainer – Drone Technologies to serve as a subject matter expert and trainer for short-term, noncredit drone technology training. This role will support the development of instructional materials and deliver Commercial Drone Pilot Training, which prepares students to take the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Knowledge Test required for commercial drone operations. The course introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to operate drones safely and professionally for business, workforce, and commercial use.

The trainer will provide FAA-aligned instruction in topics such as Part 107 regulations, Remote Pilot in Command responsibilities, airspace classifications, sectional chart interpretation, aviation weather, restricted airspace, flight planning, preflight inspections, emergency procedures, Remote ID, LAANC airspace authorization, and test-taking strategies. The trainer will also help develop and organize course materials, learning activities, practice questions, demonstrations, assessments, and other instructional resources needed for effective course delivery.

This course is designed for students interested in using drones professionally in areas such as construction, real estate, public safety, inspections, utilities, agriculture, media production, entrepreneurship, and related industries.

Position Summary:

The Part Time Trainer – Drone Technologies is responsible for serving as a subject matter expert and trainer for short-term, noncredit drone technology training. This role will support the development of course materials and deliver instruction for Commercial Drone Pilot Training, including FAA Part 107 preparation, commercial drone operations, drone safety, preflight procedures, basic flight operation concepts, and real-world UAS applications.

The trainer will work with Corporate Training & Lifelong Learning to develop and organize instructional materials, learning activities, practice questions, demonstrations, assessments, and other course resources needed to support effective course delivery. The trainer will also provide practical, FAA-aligned instruction that prepares students to understand commercial drone regulations, airspace, weather, flight planning, safety requirements, and professional drone use.


Essential Duties include:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for Commercial Drone Pilot Training and related drone technology course content.
  • Develop, organize, and prepare instructional materials for course delivery, including presentations, handouts, learning activities, practice questions, demonstrations, assessments, and student resources.
  • Deliver short-term, noncredit workforce training related to commercial drone operations, FAA Part 107 preparation, drone safety, and applied UAS concepts.
  • Prepare students to take the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Knowledge Test required for commercial drone operations.
  • Provide instruction on FAA regulations, Remote Pilot in Command responsibilities, airspace classifications, sectional chart interpretation, aviation weather, restricted airspace, flight planning, preflight inspections, emergency procedures, Remote ID, LAANC airspace authorization, and test-taking strategies.
  • Use FAA study materials, FAA Part 107 reference materials, practice questions, chart-reading exercises, and related instructional resources to support student learning.
  • Design and facilitate learning activities that connect drone knowledge and skills to real-world commercial applications in fields such as construction, real estate, inspections, utilities, agriculture, public safety, media production, entrepreneurship, and related industries.
  • Introduce students to drone safety procedures, basic flight operation concepts, preflight procedures, and professional UAS operating practices.
  • Facilitate FAA-aligned practice activities, quizzes, review sessions, and final practice exam preparation as appropriate.
  • Provide introductory UAS simulation, demonstration, or supervised basic flight-related activities if available and appropriate based on facility access, equipment, weather, and safety requirements.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and professional learning environment for students with varying levels of experience.
  • Communicate course expectations, certification preparation requirements, and the distinction between course completion and the separately scheduled official FAA exam.
  • Review and update course materials as needed to align with FAA guidance, Part 107 knowledge areas, Remote ID requirements, LAANC procedures, commercial drone industry practices, and workforce training needs.
  • Coordinate with Corporate Training & Lifelong Learning staff regarding course content, materials, equipment, scheduling, and student support.
  • Follow WCC policies, procedures, and expectations for part-time trainers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Related Duties:

  • Recommend current FAA resources, study materials, practice exams, and instructional tools.
  • Provide input on course design, delivery format, equipment needs, and future course improvements.
  • Support updates to course content as FAA rules, testing requirements, Remote ID guidance, LAANC procedures, or commercial drone industry practices change.
  • Communicate classroom, technology, equipment, or facility needs before the start of the course.
  • May assist with course improvement feedback after course offerings.
  • May support future course enhancements based on student needs, workforce demand, and industry trends.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Instruction will primarily take place in a standard classroom or computer lab with an instructor station, projector or classroom display, internet access, and seating for up to 20 students. The course may also require access to an approved indoor or outdoor demonstration area for simulation, trainer-led demonstration, or supervised introductory flight activities. Any live flight activities will depend on facility availability, equipment, weather, and applicable safety requirements.
  • The position generally requires the ability to teach in a classroom or computer lab setting, operate instructional technology, stand or walk during instruction, communicate clearly with students, and use or demonstrate small UAS-related equipment when applicable.
  • The trainer may occasionally need to transport, set up, or handle lightweight drone equipment, printed materials, or classroom resources. Any flight demonstration or simulation activity must be conducted in accordance with safety requirements and applicable procedures
Hours/Schedule:

  • This is a part-time training assignment scheduled based on course offerings, course development needs, and department need.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107 or demonstrated equivalent knowledge of FAA Part 107 commercial drone requirements.
  • Knowledge of FAA Part 107 regulations, Remote Pilot in Command responsibilities, airspace classifications, sectional charts, aviation weather, flight planning, preflight procedures, emergency procedures, Remote ID, and LAANC authorization.
  • Experience operating small unmanned aircraft systems safely and professionally.
  • Ability to serve as a subject matter expert in drone technology, commercial drone operations, and FAA Part 107 preparation.
  • Ability to develop, organize, and prepare instructional materials for course delivery.
  • Ability to teach technical material clearly to students with varying levels of prior drone or aviation experience.
  • Ability to prepare students for the FAA Remote Pilot Knowledge Test using FAA-aligned materials, practice questions, and applied examples.
  • Strong communication, organization, and training facilitation skills.
  • Ability to connect course content to commercial drone applications in fields such as construction, real estate, inspections, utilities, public safety, agriculture, media production, entrepreneurship, or related industries.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, inclusive, and professional learning environment.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use classroom technology, internet-based FAA resources, and digital instructional materials.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with WCC staff regarding course development, course delivery, scheduling, materials, and student support.

  • Prior teaching, training, coaching, or instructional experience.
  • Experience developing or adapting workforce training curriculum, instructional materials, assessments, or learning activities.
  • Experience preparing students or professionals for FAA Part 107 certification.
  • Commercial drone experience in one or more applied fields, such as construction, inspections, real estate, public safety, utilities, agriculture, mapping, media production, or entrepreneurship.
  • Experience using drone simulators, flight planning tools, LAANC authorization tools, sectional charts, or FAA testing resources.
  • Experience working with adult learners, noncredit students, workforce training participants, or career changers.
  • Knowledge of current drone industry trends, commercial use cases, and emerging UAS workforce applications.
