Position Description:
Position Summary:
The Part-Time Coordinator of the WCC Student Newspaper (WCCSN) is a part-time administrative position responsible for overseeing the direction of the student-run (print and online) newspaper. The Coordinator works directly with student scholarship recipients and contracted student contributors to provide ongoing support, guidance, and post-publication recommendations. In addition, this position is expected to develop, maintain, and implement training materials and operating procedures. The Coordinator of the WCC Student Newspaper reports to the Director of Student Development and Activities.

This position does not produce or publish journalistic content. Instead, it provides responsible guidance to student journalists to ensure published works are consistent with Associated Press style, proper grammar, balanced content, accuracy, legal standards, adherence to the SPJ Code of Ethics, and alignment with WCC Board of Trustees Policy.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an advisor to student scholarship recipients, contributors, and the advertising team, fostering a positive, respectful, and professional learning environment.
  • Support student leadership in making independent, accurate, and accountable editorial decisions, including content planning and publishing consistency.
  • Attend monthly production meetings led by student editor; oversee production process to stay informed and provide guidance as needed.
  • Complete a post-publication review of all newspaper and online content on a weekly basis to provide guidance to student journalists. Provide follow-up report to the Director.
  • Conduct weekly post-publication reviews and share feedback with students; provide summary updates to the Director.
  • Support the student editor in addressing external concerns and communicate updates to the Director.
  • Assist in maintaining archives of print and digital publications.
  • Provide support for advisory board meetings, including scheduling and logistical coordination.
  • Communicate with the Director for administrative, marketing, recruitment, and institutional updates, and maintain accurate records of meetings and operational processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Hours/Schedule:
This is a 12-month appointment working a consistent weekday afternoon schedule (exact schedule to be discussed with candidate), with the flexibility to work Friday evenings for once-monthly production days. Twenty hours (20)/ week. Daytime chaperoning for travel up to once per year. Overnight travel chaperoning up to once per year.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working for a professional newspaper as an editor or staff writer.
  • Equivalent of one (1) year or more of full-time journalism industry experience.
  • Understanding of the Canons of Journalism/Society of Professional Journalist Code of Ethics and the importance of accurate and responsible journalism.
  • Excellent written skills, ability to write proposals and keep excellent records.
  • Intermediate knowledge of online media, graphic design, and video technologies.
  • Must be detail-oriented, and a self-starter with the ability to think ahead and plan in advance.
  • Must be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and deal with interruptions.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of people including faculty, students, administrators, external businesses, corporations, and other agencies.
  • An understanding of community college students and their needs.

  • Equivalent of one (1) year or more of full-time work experience supervising or advising students.
  • Equivalent of three (3) years or more of full-time journalism industry experience.
  • Experience managing a business operation, including activity planning, budget planning, and supervision.
  • Experience and knowledge of sales and advertising.
  • Experience in digital media.
  • Community College experience.
