Position Summary:

This position is charged with providing leadership and supervision of the public safety department. With creating a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. This position works to educate the campus community regarding safety and security, minimize risk for the college and enforce all college policies and procedures and enforcement of the laws of the State of Michigan. These responsibilities are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the college mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion. This position serves as a first line supervisor and reports directly to the Deputy Chief Campus Public Safety.

Essential Duties include:

  • Perform duties of a first line supervisor.
  • Provide supervision and leadership over personnel both sworn and non-sworn for the campus public safety department.
  • Act as a liaison and establish professional relationships with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Will supervise all department investigations and act as the lead investigator as needed on assigned cases.
  • Create good working environment for the department personnel.
  • Will be the department first point of contact with the Washtenaw County Prosecutors office.
  • Will attend area wide detective bureau meetings and build relationships with area departments, to ensure coordination of resources and sharing of information as needed.
  • Be available for call back in the event there is an immediate need for police investigative service.
  • Establish a culture on campus where the public safety department is part of the community and works closely with community members to provide for the safety and security of the students, staff, faculty and visitors.
  • Providing campus patrols through foot patrol and motor vehicle operation (where applicable).
  • Perform escorts for students and employees to their cars and/or from building to building.
  • Provide security for dignitaries and other visitors to the College.
  • Investigate and file remedial reports of security and safety concerns involving building structures, yards and parking lots on campus.
  • Maintain and utilize applicable security systems such as but not limited to card access systems, CCTV, key control and radio communications as assigned.
  • Perform defensive tactics and provide medical services such as first aid, CPR and AED as needed and as trained.
  • Enforcing college rules and regulations on campus, which includes conducting investigations and completing/filing necessary documentation.
  • Maintaining building security by locking and unlocking College buildings and disarming and arming security alarms according to scheduled times.
  • Coordinate with non-sworn public safety staff.
  • Regulation and monitoring of parking conditions. Assisting students and employees that are locked out of their vehicles/classrooms and assist with jump starts.
  • Reporting of fire and safety hazards on campus.
  • Provide lost and found property services.
  • Develop a basic understanding of the operation of building mechanical systems to facilitate communication and problem reporting to Facilities department, write up and route repair requisitions as needed.
  • Provides GREAT customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of our customers.
  • Demonstrate and promote the college values.
  • Broad knowledge of college policies and procedures including specialized knowledge of faculty, staff, and student issues.
  • Regular attendance on campus is required for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • High School Diploma (or GED equivalent) plus Associate’s degree required.
  • Successfully pass a thorough background investigation, drug screening, psychological exam, physical examination and have no felony convictions.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) police certification, or have met the requirements of MCOLES certification upon hiring.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a certified police officer.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in police department operations which should include: investigations, patrol, community policing, evidence collection, leadership, and modern-day policing principles.
  • Valid driver’s license required in state assigned (Michigan)
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record as required by the college insurer.
  • Ability to professionally and confidentially investigate sensitive issues at all levels within the campus and to effectively present findings.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Strong report-writing skills.
  • Service oriented. Ability to have an exceptional customer service attitude at all times.
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, both written and oral which transcend diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and relate well to students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the College.
  • Must be able to work an irregular schedule, evenings and all days of the week as needed, additional hours during peak times or as required

  • Two (2) years’ experience handling criminal investigations.
  • Certification in defensive tactics and medical services such as first aid, CPR, and AED.
