Who we’re looking for

Toyota’s Regulatory Affairs & Environmental Sustainability Division is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Senior Engineer - Material Compliance.

The primary responsibility of this role is to coordinate material data collection for all parts and vehicle projects produced by TMNA (Toyota Motor North America) as well as develop and lead the execution of tactical action plans to remove soon-to-be-regulated chemicals from TMNA products.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Implementation, the person in this role will support the Chemical & Materials Stewardship (CMS) department's objective to provide regulatory expertise and coordinated enterprise compliance validation and reporting for TMNA’s chemicals, materials in products developed and produced by TMNA.

What you’ll be doing

  • Implementation and coordination of Toyota’s regulatory obligations related to the material content of vehicles, parts, and other products produced by TMNA:

  • Manage compliance of chemical related matters for vehicles and other projects. This includes but is not limited to International Material Data System (IMDS) data collection and reporting, Applicable Regulations List (ARL) review, vehicle Phase-in Plan, Technical Notices, etc.

  • Familiarity with chemical regulatory requirements such as EU End of Life Vehicle (ELV), U.S EPA Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), EU Registration Evaluation Authorization of Chemicals (REACH), Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), etc.

  • Develop, gain consensus, and lead TMNA in the implementation of Tactical Action Plans based on policies for articles placed on the market by TMNA (core and new products).

  • Act as the SME for CMS impact assessment of article-related matters by gathering necessary material and substance information from TMNA systems and suppliers, then analyzing that data. Make decisions about the potential impact of future regulations based on the analysis of available data, difficulty of substituting alternative substances, and understanding of future regulatory requirements.

  • Engage business units and suppliers to promptly address material compliance related issues.

  • Lead the CMS team in completing Toyota Motor Corp. (TMC – Japan) Job Request related matters and manage the day-to-day relationship between CMS and TMC-Materials Engineering Division.

  • Train and support Toyota de Brazil (TDB) and Toyota Argentina (TASA) IMDS related activities.

  • Aid in the selection of candidate suppliers for annual improvement plans. Assist in supplier meetings as the SME reviewing the suppliers’ plans and directing the suppliers on how to improve their processes.

  • Lead project teams to update and standardize data collection systems related to products.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in related Engineering discipline or related technical degree; AND/OR commensurate experience.

  • 6+ years of automotive, manufacturing or quality experience.

  • Strong communication skills, capability to influence others, relationship building, negotiation and perseverance.

  • Previous knowledge and experience in related engineering fields & processes, and in chemical and materials management.

  • Strong demonstrated, project management capabilities for highly complex, multi-year projects across diverse enterprise functions.

  • Ability to adhere to milestones and timely complete compliance and certification activities and reports.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Full capability in MS Office suite, including key project management tools, and interest in pursuing further IT tools to enhance the work.

  • Ability to represent the Chemical & Materials Stewardship Department to broad, high-level stakeholders across the enterprise, and to advocate for these colleagues to complete their related tasks timely and with high quality.

Added bonus if you have

  • Certifications or experience working with IMDS at an automotive supplier or OEM.

  • 6+ years of materials development and/or quality engineering experience.

  • Knowledge in Chemistry and Materials.

  • Experience with Power BI (highly preferred) or similar data analytics tool.

  • Master’s degree in business administration or engineering.

  • Strong understanding of North America (NA) and global chemical regulations (ELV, TSCA, CEPA, REACH, etc.).

  • Bi-lingual skills (Japanese, Spanish or Portuguese).
