Marquee Arts is a Michigan based non-profit organization committed to keeping community inspiration alive through the preservation and programming of historic theaters. Curators of film, theater and live entertainment, we proudly oversee the operations, upkeep, and artistic direction of the Michigan and State theaters in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Marquee Arts is the founding entity for Michigan's Cinetopia Film Festival and curator of the Not Just For Kids performance series. Rooted in Michigan's artistic history, the organization is committed to producing state of the art creative programming, unparalleled in diversity, quality and scope.

Marquee Arts is seeking a highly skilled, hands-on Director of Facilities and Maintenance to lead the care, preservation, and functionality of our historic venues. This is a dynamic opportunity for a passionate facilities leader with deep expertise in building systems, restoration work, and preventative maintenance to play a pivotal role in stewarding beloved community landmarks into their next century. The ideal candidate will possess strong project management capabilities and the ability to roll up their sleeves when needed. They will bring a mastery of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and construction systems, alongside demonstrated experience overseeing large-scale renovation and restoration efforts—ideally in historic venues. This position is perfect for someone who thrives in an environment where no two days are the same, and where their work has immediate, visible impact.

Essential Functions

Facilities Oversight & Preventative Maintenance

  • Oversee all building operations, repairs, and maintenance across two historic venues.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and lead the execution of comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain facilities in pristine condition with a strong emphasis on historical accuracy and aesthetic integrity, including expert-level painting and surface restoration.
  • Develop and manage long-term replacement schedules for major building systems.

Project Management

  • Lead multi-million dollar renovation, preservation, and capital improvement projects from concept through completion.
  • Coordinate contractors, engineers, architects, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and preservation standards.
  • Develop clear project scopes, timelines, budgets, and risk assessments.

Technical Expertise & Hands-On Execution

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Perform hands-on maintenance and emergency repairs when needed.
  • Maintain deep working knowledge of construction best practices, engineering principles, and life safety systems.

Budgeting & Planning

  • Develop, manage, and track departmental budgets, vendor contracts, and project expenditures.
  • Prepare capital improvement plans and maintenance forecasts.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising building integrity or guest experience.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and mentor the full-time Maintenance Technician, ensuring high performance and accountability.
  • Foster a proactive, safety-conscious, and team-oriented culture.
  • Lead emergency response and facility preparedness efforts.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position has supervisory responsibility of the Facility Maintenance Technician and the Custodians.

Work Environment: The work is primarily indoors within a theater building(s) and may have some exposure to fumes, odor, dust, etc. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This role requires walking and standing for extended periods of time. This role also regularly requires reaching, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing stairs and ladders. Extended computer use is required. The employee will regularly lift, push, pull and/or move items that weigh up to 75 pounds.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Proven experience leading facilities operations, capital projects, and preservation work in historic or high-profile buildings.
  • Expertise in building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and structural.
  • Demonstrated success managing multi-million dollar renovation or restoration projects.
  • Deep understanding of building codes, ADA compliance, fire safety systems, and environmental regulations.
  • Strong budgeting, scheduling, and vendor management skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with sound judgment and initiative.
  • Experience supervising facilities staff and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Hands-on and solutions oriented.
  • Passionate about maintaining and restoring historic structures.
  • Calm under pressure with a strong work ethic.
  • Enthusiastic team player with a sense of pride in their work.
  • Committed to creating safe, welcoming, and beautiful spaces for artists and audiences alike

Preferred Education and Experience: Experience working in historic theaters or arts venues

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The salary range is $85,000 to $100,000 annually.
